Wife of President of the Republic affirms government concern with girls' education

SUNA- Wife of the President of the Republic Sayda Fatima Khalid has affirmed the government's concern with girls' education, calling for official, popular and voluntary concerted efforts for eradicating illiteracy among girls in rural areas. This came Sunday when she addressed celebrations marking the National Enrollment Day, which coincides with June 16, held at the premises of the Ministry of General Education.
 
The National Enrollment Day emanated from the recommendations of the First Conference on Girls Education and adopted as a policy for increasing the girls' enrollment. Minister of General Education Dr. Hamid Mohamed Ibrahim indicated to important role of women in bringing up the generations, disclosing that the rate of girls' education in cities has increased and that the Ministry is now targeting education of girls in rural areas and remote villages.

He called upon the states for exerting more efforts and drawing up plans and strategies, praising in this regard the endeavors made by the wife of the President of the Republic on girls' education in Sudan. General Education Ministry Undersecretary Dr. Al-Muatasim Abdel-Rahim said the aim of the National Enrollment Day is to make the local communities and the decision-makers participate in girls' education campaigns which target girls between 6-13 years old, explaining that girls enrollment in basic stage increased by 66% in the year 2006-2007.

Secretary-General of the General Union of the Sudanese Women Ustaza Raga Hassan Khalifa underlined that the Union will work with civil society organizations and UN for spreading girls education. UNICEF representative underscored the necessity of enrollment of all girls and boys who are in school ages in the framework of education for all program. AS/BT
