The Dam Implementation Unit Executive Director, Minister Osama Abdallah Mohammad Al-Hassan announced that the third of March will be the starting date for electricity generation from Merowe Dam, an event which will be launched by the President of the Republic amid participation of representatives of several Arab funds and other parties that funded the project.

Al-Hassan said at the date the unit (1) will join unit (2) to produce the first electricity power from the Dam, affirming that the turbines will be run to the operational speeds.

He affirmed that the Dam will generate (1250) megawatts as the largest water-generating electricity project in the country, pointing out that Roseries Dam generates (240) megawatts while Sennar produces (15) megawatts, stressing that the project will not affect the palm trees in Northern State and that the area which the dam's lake will submerge does not exceed (155) agricultural  feddans.

He affirmed that the establishment of the Dam and the electricity that it will generate can have great developments impacts all over the country.

Al-Hassan said that next March the electricity will reach the national grid through Markhiat and Kabbashi transmission lines, adding that on the 15th of March the dam's electricity will reach Red Sea State where Port Sudan transmission station will be launched.

The Dam's electricity will reach Northern State on 18th March where the transmission stations of each of Dongola, Dabba and Meroe will be launched.

On the 23rd of March, it will reach River Nile State and the launching of Atbara transmission station.

By June the electricity will reach Renk and by the end of the same month the completion of the civil and hydro- mechanical launch will be celebrated.

In October the electricity will reach El-Obeid in Northern Kordufan and in April 2010 the remaining two turbines of the Dam will be in operation.

Al-Hassan affirmed the readiness of the Dams Unit to establish Kajbar Dam, adding that they already have started establishing dams in Southern Sudan affirming that if they vote for the benefit of separation, then the Dams Unit will hand them the studies calling at the same time to distance the dams' establishments from the political disputes. 

Deputy General Director of Dams Unit, Engineer Mohammad Al-Hassan Al-Hadari called for opening a new chapter between the Unit and the citizens for the sake of building our nation.
