Sudan submits third periodical report to the African commission on human and peoples' rights

Sudan will submit its third periodical report at the 43rd ordinary session of the African commission on human and peoples' rights, which will take place at Ezulwini - Kingdom of Swaziland on 7 - 22 May, 2008.

The report submitted in accordance with article 62 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and scheduled for consideration at the 43rd Ordinary Session  on 08 May 2008.

So far Sudan had submitted three reports the 1st Report submitted on October 1996 (combining 1988-1996 overdue reports) and considered on April 1997 (21st Ordinary Session).  The 2nd Report submitted on April 2003 (combining all overdue reports) and considered on May 2004 (35th Ordinary Session). The 3rd Report is (scheduled for consideration at the 43rd Ordinary Session) on 08 May 2008.

About the Commission:

The African commission on human and peoples' rights report was established by the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights which came into force on 21 October 1986 after its adoption in Nairobi (Kenya) in 1981 by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU.), the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights is charged with ensuring the promotion and protection of Human and Peoples' Rights throughout the African Continent. The Commission has its headquarters in Banjul, The Gambia.

On 21 October 1986, the Charter came into force. This date has been declared, and is being celebrated as an African Human Rights Day.

The Commission was officially inaugurated on 2nd November 1987 in Addis Ababa, Ethopia, after its members had been elected in July of the same year by the OAU 23rd Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

Submission of state reports

In accordance with Article 62 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, States Parties to the Charter are required to submit every two years, a report on the legislative or other measures taken, with a view to giving effect to the rights and freedoms recognized and guaranteed by the Charter.
