Talks between the Sudanese Government and the joint mission to the United Nations and the African Union (UNAMID) on facilitating the deployment of peacekeeping troops in the troubled Darfur region of western Sudan were held yesterday.
Rudolf Adada the joint mission representative said in a press statement that the talks focused on the use of aircraft and rehabilitation of airports and the new airstrips in Darfur, adding that "we have agreed to work together as UNAMID and the Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority to address the exploitation and use of airports without difficulties."
Adada said that the basic problems of the forces are of logistical nature and mainly faces difficulties in transporting equipments and materials from the port (Port Sudan) to Darfur.
Regarding the required numbers of troops Adada said, "We need a 20 thousand military forces and six thousand of police forces in addition to five thousand local and international staff."
Since the day before Ethiopian troops participating in joint forces start arriving, preceded by the arrival of the second batch of Egyptian engineers.
