SUNA - Sudan Permanent Envoy to the United Nations Ambassador Abdul-Mahmoud Abdul-Halim has addressed the meetings of the Social and Economic Council of the United Nations, held at ministerial level in New York and devoted to the discussion of effects of climate change on food security.

He explained that the world food crisis, which is aggravated by climatic changes and the global financial crisis, threatens not only the efforts of the international community to achieve the millennium development goals but also cast a shadow on the objectives of achieving sustainable development in the developing countries and particularly in the African countries and the least developed countries.

He said that Sudan looks forward to the Economic and Social Council to support the efforts of economic and social development and environment protection, enumerating Sudan's efforts in dealing with the climatic challenges especially drought and desertification and efforts to revive the agricultural sector through the national campaign to achieve agricultural revolution.

The ambassador added that Sudan is expected to be one of three countries that are promised to provide food to millions around the world, explaining the investment climate in the Sudan and the partnerships that are now underway with many Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries within the framework of realizing food security.
