SUNA- Sudan envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdul-Mahmoud Abdul-Halim, said that the government will work to make a success the mission of the new chief mediator of the United Nations and the African Union for Darfur on ground that Sudan is the top beneficiary from the settlement of Darfur issue. In a statement to SUNA, Ambassador Abdul-Halim said that the government is much keen to achieve peace in Darfur as soon as possible.
He pointed out that he conveyed to the United Nations the agreement of Sudan government on the appointment of the Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso, Djibril Bassole, to assume the mission of the new chief mediator of the UN and African Union for Darfur. The President of the Republic, Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir, has welcomed, during his participation in the recent 11th African Union summit in Sharm Al-Shaikh, the nomination of Djibril Bassole as the UN and African Union chief mediator.
Ambassador Abdul-Halim praised the skills and experience of the new UN and African Union chief mediator who contributed to solution of a number of disputes in Africa, including the conflict in Cote d'Ivoire and in Togo and the Tuareg issue.
He referred to the recent report of the former UN and African Union envoys to Darfur, Jan Eliasson and Dr. Salem Ahmed Salem, to the Security Council which attributed the lack of progress in their mission to the splits in the rebel movements in Darfur, the double-standard messages and failure of the Security Council to sanction the rebel movements that are impeding the peace process in Darfur.
Ambassador Abdul-Halim indicated that the new chief mediator of the UN and the African Union, Djibril Bassole, is expected to arrive in New York in the coming few days before his visit to Sudan. He said that the Security Council would issue in current July a resolution renewing the mandate of the UN and African Mission for Darfur, UNAMID, which is due to end on July 31st.
